My i-D magazine layout of may journalistic piece

I began writing the title the path of ... Diversity, becuase i-D magazine always begins the title in that format and wrote my name below it to show in a differnent style of font, and underlined them both.

I write the title beauty is in the eye of the beholder becuase it's a well known saying which i-D magazine creates with their title and added the page numberand the name of the issue.
I wrote a small sentence in below the title and started the first paragraph in typewriter font to show their typical design throughout the magazine.
Then I wrote the rest of the journalistic piece in. 
I wrote the rest of the article and added the other side of the name of the issue and page number.

I used a quote in in a bigger font and different style of text  and wrote who the quote was by.

Disc Design

          





I began finding the image of of Fei Fei Sun for the disc from the i-D magazine cover because I think it's a bold image and I think it represents the style of i-D and the my journalistic piece on on asian women in the fashion industry.
I then used the shape tool to find the right sized shape and chose the area I wanted to be visible and after added the text in the middle, in the same colour as as the i- D logo.

I looked through articles from the i-D magazine to recognise the structure needed for a typical i-D magazine articles, which helped the style you need.















Du Juan

Du Juan is the most internationally successful Chinese supermodel of all time. She has appeared on the cover of Vogue China eleven times, more than any other model or celebrity. In 2005 Du Juan made her first cover of vogue Paris, becoming the first ever Asian model to achieve this. however she shared the cover with Gemma Ward.

The Media

This video is about how the media has affected young asian people about their appearance, desiring to have features of a white person.
A lot of Asians today, especially ones who grew up in western countries develop a self hate, internalize racism amongst themselves and onto other asians. From eyelid surgery to nose surgery, people are trying to look more westernized to fit in societies standard.

Internet society

I've firstly researched asian models on the web and images and mostly found "glamour models" than any fashion models. I think chinese, japanese and korean models are forgotten in the fashion industry, showing very little notice than african people which I strongly feel there needs to be a massive awareness of this issue.

Vogue

The first Chinese supermodel Fei Fei Sun to be on the cover of italian vogue, which shows the industry is all so slowly coming to reason, however the daily mail states that the UK and the US have still to this day have never used an asian model on the cover of their magazine.

There was contoversy by a feeling that American Vogue "lumped" all the girls into one shoot together, than giving their own editorial shoot, in the form of a bigger story.

"I do sincerely hope that American Vogue will continue to use Asian models, and that this is not some 'flash in the pan trend" comments JP on Models.com.  I can't remember the last time I saw a single Asian girl story in the magazine. Other comments said "What a joke. TWO pages? Why isn't there a full-on editorial or a cover?"

Victoria's Secret



Victoria's Secret created the “Go East” collection, which has a theme of Asian-inspired lingerie wear which had the tag line: “Your ticket to an exotic adventure.”
Jacinto commented, saying "The lack of Asian women here simply exposes the deep-rooted nature of the Orientalist narrative, one that trades real humanness for access to culture," she wrote. "Besides, it can only feel sexy and exotic if it's on an "American" body—without the feeling of accessing something foreign or forbidden, there can be no fantasy."
then explained that  "It's important that companies like VS know that capitalizing on a stereotype and on a culture is tasteless and offensive".


The Guardian quotes Annie Walshaw, a model booker, on the subject:
“When the client sends you a brief you know straight away they’re not talking about a black girl. They say they want ‘a girl with long hair, who looks like a fairy’


It seems designers are mostly interested in this centain "look" in mind, apparently the reason for using white models is because the way they are stereo-typed to be delicate. 


The designers only desired "look" is white european women for make - up and catwalks. Why?
well, the excuse given The Guardian quoted from Annie Walshaw:

"There's not so much work for them, and sometimes photographers and makeup artists are scared. They don't know how to light or make them up properly so it takes a lot longer . . . It's a slower process."

Nick Knight

Nick Knight is very diverse when it comes to his imagery to serious moments of life and pushing the boundaries of diversity to conventional ideals of beauty.

Nick knight created a video a multi level film to show his poltical views on racism through fashion film, creating a very dramatic approach to his strong thoughts on racism to get his word across.

Showing the public, uniting races together as a family was very controversial then and probably still now, this captured the public and makes a statement.


i-D magazine


i-D magazine is very refeshing to general magazines you would visuially see on a daily basis. It contemplates every angle of fashion to age. There's influential pieces of writing from many different people and a variation images of celebrities and models of all shapes, colours, sizes and ages which shows diversity and heart of fashion.



The font is very youthful, edgy in form of a type writer in the magazine and online, showing the clear areas of the names, questions and answers and titled quotes.

Every Body Counts

Caryn Franklin gave a presentation on Diversity and how the cycle of time has changed through the years, from men/women being equal in shape and size to currently using a image of a young, pale, slender model.



History of Fashion


The fashion in the 60s all about Twiggy, it was the birth of modernity.




In the 80's we weren't aware who the models were, it was focused on the clothing and we felt free to experiment style. You weren't able to see the images from catwalks, the public weren't particularly following trends.

The 90's had more standard models for a consumer of variety of bodies who were divaish, iconic and aspirational, to who were respected there careers and successful and relateable to the public, for varied skin tones and healthy curvy figures.







The current images you frequently see on a catwalk of a young man and woman.






Models on the catwalk become very tall, slender, young and pale showing an extreme image that translated to weak, frail and zombie like. Showing the public an unrealistic imagery of unachieveable bodies and unhealthy for any human.


People these days are critcized on outfits, body and shape etc, such as lady gaga who recently gained a few pounds which critics slammed her weight gain. Lady Gaga stood up herself in this article, explaining a normal body size is "real beauty", using an example of Marilyn Monroe who was also a curvy women of a healthy size 16, this shows how society has negatively changed  with no freedom but pressure to be a perfect skinny. 


Vivienne Westwood






This ad campaign is very different and indiviual to most fashion campaign because you see in these images, the designer Vivienne Westwood who is 71 years old of a healthy size, proud to show her flesh and highly fashionabley designed outfit for her age which looks like shes in africa, which shows a real view of the world. I also think it's interesting as well to us a celebrity Pamela Anderson, yes shes thin however she a normal height with curves, who is also older than average model, and show a fun refreshing side of fashion photography. 



Vivienne Westwood also used another star from Mad Men who is very vuluptuous and different to a typical model and shows great pride in beautiful plus size models.


Chen Mann

































Chen mann is very unique and orginal to chinese culture, showing it's beauty and indiviality, from a basic image to colour culture and imaginitive style.
